This is Belgium is a body of photographic work by the artist Bert Houbrechts. Eerily documenting Monday morning frontages of villas and warehouses turned into rave clubs, the photographs penetrate both visual and societal paradoxes. Illusion, Obsession, Cherry Moon, Escape and Explosion (the five usurped buildings’ club names) sheltered day-long dance ecstasies amidst presumedly tranquil Antwerpian purlieus.
The series was published in ID-Magazine’s February 2001 issue, curated by Raf Simons. Aside from photography, Bert Houbrechts has dispersed his creative energy into plural fields of the fashion industry. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, he worked closely with the city’s creative scene in the 90s. Today Bert lives periodically between Vienna, Basel, Paris and Berlin.
I PURGE MY GHASTLY, STALE, GROTESQUE AND QUOTIDIAN DRAG. TONGUES AND PULSE — ENTER MY BLESSED CHERRY MOON. IN THY NAME I PURIFY MY CLOGGED AND STAGNANT (CONTESTING) SELF. THE ZONE. THIS IS THE ANTI-ZERO. AN EPIC EAR DRUM ANAESTHETIC AND ILLUSION OF THAT ULTRA HUMAN. NIGHT EXPLOSION INTO MORROW, INTO AGE OF OBSESSION. PERVERSE AND REVERSED ESCAPE.
